Dear ants: I WILL win!

When I got up this morning I went to the school to help organize the office.  Elizabeth had wanted me to take a load of supplies from their house with me when I went, so I filled my backpack with books, carried a couple more, and took a bag of art supplies.  As I was leaving, one of the Jungle Barn staff (I think his name is Jerry) was adamant about helping me.  Off we went, me with my backpack and a couple more books, and him with the art bag.  That was possibly the fastest I have ever walked.  I'm not sure how he moved so fast because he's probably almost a foot shorter than me, but by the time I got to the school I was dripping in sweat.

I chugged some water and got to work.  The new principal from Canada has been here a little over a week now and will start working tomorrow I think.  The office was just filled with stacks and stacks of books, games, pens, pencils, markers, flash cards, notebooks, and anything else you can imagine that has been donated to the school.  They were happy to see me there because I could put things on the top shelf :)  So I did that, helped organize the games, worked on separating markers from colored pencils because there were a bunch just jumbled in a box, and helped put books on the bookshelf.  We rearranged so that the front part of the office is kind of for a receptionist/secretary, and divided the back half, where the principal will be, with bookshelves so she can have her own space.  It looks so much better than when we first got started!  When I had walked in this morning, I thought there was no way it would get done today, but the office has definitely transformed.

I walked with Olivia to D-Mall after that because she wanted to look for a frisbee.  Elizabeth's disappeared the other day after we had played with it.  We discovered that frisbees are not cheap, so that was a no go, and headed home.  I ate lunch and went over to the house for a while to watch TV, got super tired, and decided to take a nap.  After my nap, I helped at a feeding that takes place at the basketball courts almost right behind the Jungle Barn.  We sang, played a couple games, told the Bible story about the Battle of Jericho, and the kids ate and colored their papers.  I'm hoping to try out some different sites this week to figure out which ones I want to consistently go to.  This one was fun, but from what I understand, these kids are probably the least neediest of any of the sites.

Lauren, Anderson, and I went to eat after that, and when I got back I saw a ginormous roach scuttling across the floor as soon as I turned the light on.  He tried to hide under my bed, but I eventually got the best of him.  So gross.  Then, I saw that my trusty tupperware I bought isn't so trusty.  I had put my bread in them because the ants here will get into anything, but I wasn't sure how well it would work after I realized the lids don't really snap shut.  I was right.  Ants were swarming all over and inside one of the cases of bread.  Thankfully I had another case sitting on top, and they hadn't bothered to work their way up to that one.  I took out the bad case, opened it, and threw the bread out in the trash that's in the hallway.  I immediately started feeling those little tiny ants crawling all over my hand.  They don't bite, but they're just so annoying.  I rinsed out the tupperware thing, put my good bread in a ziploc I had been using for something else, put that in a grocery sack, and hung it from this hanging lamp thing I have in the corner of my room that I don't use.  Maybe that will work...

Tomorrow is a school day!  I should probably get back to my good sleep schedule!  Oh, and I found out that next Monday is another holiday.  Apparently national holidays are just made up randomly here.  Carla went to a school in Manila her senior year and said that there was one time when she found out about a school holiday one night ahead of time because the president decided to declare it a national holiday.  Pretty crazy!  Like I've said before, though, I know this laid-back schedule isn't the norm.  Everyone's been telling me I just happened to get here at the best time, and they don't know what to do with themselves with all this time off!  I'm thankful to be able to work my way into things.
